What is the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated jewelry?
Technically, plated is a term that actually describes both names, gold-filled jewelry and gold-plated jewelry.
The difference is in how much gold is actually plated on to the base-metal core.
- Gold-filled, by law, has to have 5% gold.
- Whereas Gold-plated, by law, will have less than .05% gold.
- Where as 14 kt Gold is 58.3% gold.
- Gold-filled would have .05 grams of gold.
- Gold-plated would have up to .00049 grams of gold.
Gold-filled is meant to last a life time.
Gold-plated, in my experience lasts a month, then the basemetal wire shows.
Is it worth paying the higher price for Gold-filled? If you want to have a piece of jewelry that will be a investment, be sold, and look great for a long time? YES!
But if you're looking for a piece of jewelry that will look nice for a month or so, pay the lower price for the Gold-plated.
Know the difference with jewelry.
I have in the past month noted that some large businesses were selling Gold-plated jewelry for the price of Gold-filled!
If the piece of jewelry has intricate designs on it, it most likely is Gold-plated. This is when the base-metal is dipped in to gold quickly.
Always ask if the piece of jewelry does not have it's quality noted on it.
With handmade jewelry, many times this information is not noted on the jewelry. But it is written in the description.
